The composer's period of exile in Sweden was a difficult one - when this symphony was completed in 1958, he had already been there for ten years - and this is reflected in the typically astringent harmonies, highly focused orchestration, and rhythmically driven nature of the work. The slow sections of the second movement retain the symphony's overall mood but add a uniquely austere beauty.
