The global need for new energy infrastructure has surged, becoming a defining trend of the decade. Rising energy demand and aging facilities are straining existing energy systems, leading to a race to deploy new technologies and build modern infrastructure. Investment in infrastructure, however, has struggled to reach the levels required to achieve the scale and speed demanded by demographic changes and policy aims. Accelerating progress will depend not only on increases in investment, but also on innovations in project design and construction, smart technology integration, system planning, regulations and permitting, and workforce development that, collectively, can enable the rapid buildout of affordable and reliable energy infrastructure.
