Israeli drones over Beirut as US pushes for Hezbollah disarmament

For the past week, Israeli drones have been seen flying low over Beirut and its suburbs, while in the south and east of the country, deadly strikes are intensifying. This increased Israeli military presence came as US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack warned Lebanon of a return to confrontation with Israel should it fail to disarm Hezbollah. “The American warnings, which came from more than one source, indicate that we are heading for a confrontation,” says retired army general and military analyst Khaled Hamade. “Today, the state must ask itself how it can get out of this impasse.” Under a ceasefire that ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah last year, Israel must withdraw from Lebanese territory it still occupies and Hezbollah must hand over its weapons.
