Towering and alien, its matte black surface absorbed the faint light, save for the triangular aperture at its core. From within, an ominous red glow pulsed, not steadily, but irregularly, like a heartbeat that faltered, hesitated, and resumed. It was as if the Oracle was alive, yet bound to a purpose long forgotten by its makers. Cables as thick as tree trunks snaked from its sides, their origin disappearing into the shadows above. They vibrated faintly, carrying a current that hummed just below the threshold of human perception. It wasn’t the sound that unnerved the lone figure kneeling before the artifact—it was the absence of everything else. The silence around the Oracle was absolute, an oppressive void that seemed to devour thought and time. The kneeling figure, wrapped in tattered, soot-stained fabric, bore the insignia of the Soteria Project—a long-abandoned initiative to explore and control anomalous phenomena. They had been sent to make contact. No one else had returned. The Oracle's glow intensified, casting sharp, angular shadows across the chamber. The Oracle was merely a conduit, a doorway through which the unknown peered back at the observer. As the red light flared once more, the figure was engulfed in its radiance. Their shadow stretched, distorted, and then dissolved into the glow, leaving nothing behind but an echo—a whisper of thought that lingered in the void. The Oracle returned to its silence. The cables pulsed faintly, the symbols on its surface rearranging themselves into a new, unknowable pattern. Somewhere in the darkness of the chamber, the faint hum resumed. Another visitor would come. They always did. The Oracle waited, timeless and inscrutable, as it had for eons. Whatever it sought, it was patient.
