Timothy Cowen, Chair of the Antitrust Practice at Preiskel & Co., leading in the past BT’s competition law and public policy team for many years. Tim has offered a solid, persuasive, informative, and easy-to-follow exposition of the history of competition law & its deep common law roots (truly remarkable), its uneasy (and continuous) relationship with regulation, and the current state of antitrust enforcement in relation to Big Tech. He has very skilfully identified under-explored parallels between the regulation of telecommunications and Big Tech, suggesting many helpful ways to improve the existing framework. This is a highly informative presentation of how Big Tech companies function and how their entrenched market status be addressed by the DMA/DMCCA enforcers. Tim has also reflected on the situation with Ad Tech, covering both its mechanics and recent high-profile cases and offering many other remarkable observations. In the previous episode (No. 118, published last Tuesday) we had a conversation with the BEUC Director General Agustin Reyna – • Agustín Reyna, Director General of BEUC, T... In the next episode (No. 120, to be published next Tuesday) we feature an interview with Kai Zenner from the European Parliament on the recent “European Way: A Blueprint for Reclaiming Our Digital Future” initiative. The Digital Markets Research Hub is an independent academic initiative aiming at scrutinising the functioning of competition/regulation in digital markets. We host one-to-one interviews with leading policymakers, regulators and practitioners. We also organise online mini-workshops inviting high-profile experts and academics in various fields of digital competition law & policy to discuss the most vibrant issues of the ongoing regulatory reforms in digital markets. While having our clear normative stand on the matters discussed within the hub, we value different views and invite relevant stakeholders and thinkers representing the whole spectrum of reasonable positions on how to regulate competition in digital markets. Our purpose is not to convey a message, but to contribute to the discussion; the main criterion for selecting invitees is the easy-going way they share their expertise. All our materials are available at YouTube channel, which you are very welcome to subscribe to. This interview is organised & conducted by Prof. Oles Andriychuk, School of Law, University of Exeter.
