This video is demonstrating the different steps within the Dutch 5-step Behavior Protocol. The purpose of this protocol is to create a relationship based on mutual respect and mutual trust. The mindset and the body language of the handler is critical important. Being comfortable in the presence of the parrot, as if the parrot is not present, is critical to make the bird feel comfortable too. In step 1 we are creating desired behavior by being happy and comfortable in the presence of the parrot as if the parrot is not there. In step 2 we are rewarding the bird for the behavior we just have created in step 1. In step 3 we are rewarding the intelligence of the parrot In In step 4 we let the bird know that he/she may touch a toy, bite into a pen or toy or may step up the hand. In step 4 the bird experience may because it is a reward for the desired behavior and a reward for their intelligence. By doing so we have already created a relationship based on mutual respect and mutual trust. In step 5 we start over with step 1, 2, 3 and 4 and continue making the bird experience in step 5 that being in a towel, taking a blood sample , grooming the beak, grooming the nails or wingclipping is no problem. After following these steps, the bird feels comfortable with the one who has manipulated and handled the bird. The different steps only take seconds and it's important to follow through within a short period of time. This protocol can be considered as one of the secrets of the kindergarten Teacher’s Secret, dealing with young children. Drs. Jan Hooimeijer DVM RPBC Vogeldierenarts/ Avian Veterinarian (ret.)
