30-year NL and MLB umpire Bob Davidson ejected Expos mascot Youppi! on August 23, 1989 for banging on the Dodgers dugout in the 11th inning of a 22-inning ballgame. Story: https://www.closecallsports.com/2019/... More stories from umpiring greats via our Plate Meeting Podcast: https://www.closecallsports.com/searc... Los Angeles skipper Tommy Lasorda complained about half-way through the six-hour, 14-minute game and Davidson ordered the offending mascot removed pursuant to Official Baseball Rule 8.01(b) [then known as 9.01] ("Each umpire has authority to order a player, coach, manager or Club officer or employee to do or refrain from doing anything which affects the administering of these rules, and to enforce the prescribed penalties"). With the LA-MTL game on 8/23 the final game of the series, Davidson's crew, led by chief Greg Bonin, was set to depart for their next series in California at 6am the next morning, but thanks to the six-hour game, the umpires didn't get back to their hotel until well after 3am, and the decision was made to forgo sleep and head straight to the airport for the tedious Montreal-Chicago-Los Angeles flight.
