Which Premier League Clubs Suffered The Most/Least Injuries In ’21-22?

Premier League injury expert Dr. Raj, DPT explains which clubs suffered the most and least injuries during the 21-22 season based on data from Premier Injuries | Which Premier League Clubs Suffered The Most/Least Injuries In ’21-22? | Premier Leaguel injury analysis For reference, I’m a DPT (Doctor of Physio), sports scientist, fitness coach, strength and conditioning specialist, movement and mechanics coach, researcher, youth football (soccer) coach, mindfulness clinician and owner of 3CB Performance —providing sports medicine & sports performance services virtually and in-person at clinics in West LA and Valencia, CA. The Premier League and injuries go hand in hand, it’s arguably the most intense and physical league in the world. During the season, it’s hard not to lose the forest for the trees with individual injuries but after the conclusion of it, we gain a birds-eye view - particularly through the brilliant data work of Premier Injuries, led by Ben Dinnery. They created this superb infographic on time loss absence for the 2021-22 season and normalized for injuries per 1k minutes. The 5 clubs with the least time-loss to injuries, in ascending order, began with two North London rivals in Arsenal and Tottenham who were tied at 5th with 6.2 injuries per 1k minutes, 4th was West Ham United at 5.7, the league champions in 3rd which is especially impressive considering the total games they played across all competitions, Crystal Palace were 2nd at 4.8, and top of the pack were Wolverhampton at only 4.7 injuries per 1k minutes. On the other side of the coin, Manchester United were 16th with 9.7 injuries per 1k minutes (nearly double that of top ranked Wolverhampton), Norwich City 17th at 9.8, Everton 18th with 11.3 which partly explains their very tough season and relegation battle, Leeds United 2nd to last at 11.5 with former manager Marco Bielsa’s high-energy playing and practicing style with a small squad coming home to roost (something new manager Jesse Marsch openly commented on as well), and finally Watford who suffered an astonishing 13.6 injuries per 1k minutes played! One last thing to point out is if not for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott’s ankle-fracture dislocation and subsequently missing 4 months, Liverpool likely would have made top 5 least time-loss which - like Manchester City - is an astonishing accomplishment for their medical & fitness staffs considering the amount of games played. If you enjoyed this video, stay tuned for the next video where I’ll look at the changes in injuries and time-loss data from the 2020-21 season to last season for each of the clubs.
