Ujjain Rape Case: Is Apprehending the Rapist Enough?

The entire country was left in shock when a video of a 12-year old rape-victim, wandering on the streets for help, emerged. The victim was seen going door-to-door in semi-naked condition seeking for help, and was even shooed away by some. The girl was rescued by a priest of an ashram from Ujjain, who covered the victim’s body with clothes and rushed her to a nearby hospital. The accused is being identified as Bharat Soni, an auto-driver. The Ujjain police had arrested five-people in connection with the case, and later the investigations revealed that Bharat Soni was the one who raped. The police had taken Soni into custody based on CCTV footage. The accused Soni even tried to escape from the police custody while he was being taken for spot-verification by the police. According to the statements from police, Soni attacked police personnels with stones, which resulted in injuries to two police. And during the chase, Soni injured his leg after he fell on a cemented road. The accused Soni has been brought to the district hospital for treatment. Ujjain Superintendent of Police Sachin Sharma said that they got information about the victim on 25th September in Ujjain. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital, and an FIR was registered in Mahakal police station. A team was set up which continuously monitored major routes and based on the CCTV footage, the police got information about an auto. The police found blood stains on the backseat of the auto-rickshaw. This incident brought a major backlash for the Madhya Pradesh government. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stated that the accused Bharat Soni will be given strict punishment. Now, as the accused is being caught and is in custody. One simple question which comes to my mind, and I think most of you would be having some similar questions. Even after happening strict laws and punishment for rapists, why is there is no decline in rape cases. Once every week or months, we get to hear rape cases. Now the question is, what it is which is prompting these ill-minded and criminalised-brain people to commit this big crime even after having these strict punishment for rapes. Is it that they do not bother about it or the environment in which they are raised makes them a rapist? If it is the rapist’s environment, then who is responsible for the growth of such an ill-environment? Should we blame our society for not caring about a rape-victim, just like all those who people who declined help to this 12-year old girl? I won’t ignore the fact that there are good people in society, just like the priest who helped the victim, but what about those who become blind when it comes to help rape-victims? In this whole situation, our administration is the one which has to make sure that incidents like this do not happen. So, in this Ujjain-rape case, police came into picture after the girl was already raped. Should preventive actions from the administration have saved the girl? The arrest of the accused is like treating the symptoms, but what about the disease? Rape is a disease which needs to be erradicated from the society.
