The death of Jesus on the cross is one of the most important and sacred events in the history of Christianity. It was not only a tragic event, but also the pinnacle of God's love for humanity. In this profound sermon, Bishop Peter Nguyen Van Kham helps us delve deeper into this mystery to better understand the meaning, responsibility and value of the sacrifice that Jesus made for the salvation of the whole world. 1. Who is responsible for the death of Jesus? A question that has always caused debate throughout history: Who is responsible for the death of Christ? Was it Judas Iscariot, who betrayed his Master for only thirty pieces of silver? Or was it the chief priests and scribes, who plotted to eliminate Jesus because they feared losing their power? Or was it Pilate, the Roman governor, who gave in to the pressure of the crowd and allowed Jesus to be crucified even though he knew that he was innocent? Bishop Peter led the audience to an important truth: not only those historical figures but each of us also had a part to play in the death of the Lord. Because of human sin, because of infidelity, because of selfishness, because of the times we denied God in our lives - all contributed to His suffering. This is not a condemnation, but an invitation for us to look back at ourselves to convert and receive salvation. 2. Freedom and love in the death of Jesus Despite being betrayed, wrongly convicted, and suffering painful torture, Jesus was not a victim of fate or forced to die. On the contrary, He actively accepted death with absolute love and freedom. Jesus himself affirmed: "No one takes my life from me; but I lay it down of my own accord" (John 10:18). His death is the fulfillment of God's plan of salvation, a new covenant sealed with his blood, so that humanity can be reconciled with the Father. Bishop Peter emphasized that this is the highest proof of love: a love that holds nothing back for itself, a love that accepts sacrifice to the end. 3. From suffering to glory: Hope in the cross Perhaps for the Jews and pagans of that time, the death of Jesus was a humiliating failure. A Messiah crucified like a criminal was nothing less than a disgrace. But in God's plan, it was the path to glory. Like a grain of wheat that must die to produce many grains, the death of Jesus opens a new era: the era of Resurrection, of salvation for all people. Bishop Peter invites us to look at the cross not only as a symbol of suffering, but as a sign of hope. When we encounter difficulties and challenges in life, let us remember that Jesus himself has gone through the way of the cross before us. He understands human pain, and He accompanies us in every situation. 4. Invitation: Live according to the spirit of Jesus Listening to this sermon, each of us is invited not only to reflect, but also to act. If Jesus loved and sacrificed to the end, then we are also invited to live according to His example: Know how to forgive instead of resenting. Know how to live for others instead of thinking only of ourselves. Know how to be steadfast in faith, even when facing challenges. The cross is not the end, but the beginning of a new life. Bishop Peter concluded his sermon with a meaningful message: let the death and resurrection of Jesus become the compass for our lives, so that we can live worthy of the redemption that He has given.
