Aareschlucht Gorge, Switzerland. The Aare Gorge is a natural wonder 1400 meters long, 200 meters deep and 1 meter wide at its narrowest. It is located in Haslital in the eastern Bernese Oberland at the foot of the Grimsel and Susten passes. The vast gorge can be easily and safely traversed via footbridges and tunnels in about 45 minutes. Due to the constantly cool temperature, the Aare Gorge is a natural place to relax on pleasant hot days. During the rains, the gorge impresses with its mysticism and sometimes larger water masses. The all-weather destination is open from early April to November 1. Haslital is one of the great transverse valleys of the Alps. It stretches from the Grimsel Pass to Lake Brinz. The flat bottom of the lower valley is separated from the upper valley by a significant rocky outcrop called the Kirchet. Over tens of thousands of years, the Aare eroded its course through the limestone cliffs of the Kirchet, creating the Aare Gorge, which is only 1-2 meters wide in places. In 1888, the gorge was opened to tourists. A path leads through the Aareschlucht, which since 1912 has been equipped with artificial lighting for night walks. The property belongs to the Aareschlucht-Aktiengesellschaft, founded in 1892 in Willigen, Oberhassli. The gorge is open daily from the beginning of April to November 1 and you can walk through pedestrian bridges and smaller bypass tunnels. At the western entrance from Mayringer there is the Aareschlucht West train station and at the eastern entrance from Innertkirchen there is the Aareschlucht Ost tunnel stop on the Mayringen-Inertkirchen railway. You can also get here by car or bus. Local legends say that the gorge was home to tacelurks. Thanks to alleged sightings up to the 20th century, the mythical animal is now the mascot of tourist advertising for hiking in the gorge.
