It’s still very early to be drawing big conclusions, but I really am seeing a lot that I like with the T:Slim Basal-IQ suspends. I had never used suspends before as part of my diabetes management and was blown away by what I saw with them after starting the 670G. It was too much too soon, and the suspends were overwhelming. After a pretty good chunk of time though, I began to see SOME benefit to them... if only they could be shorter. The long suspends, often spanning an hour or two, caused a mess, and I wasn’t a fan. However, overriding a suspend on the 670G also meant disabling the feature for between 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the circumstances. It was a big choice then... to allow the pump to suspend undeterred or to override and lose the function. I ultimately turned the feature off and learned to live with my lows again. I’m now almost a couple of weeks into wearing the T:Slim, and I’m slowly learning to trust Basal-IQ and its own suspend feature. It works differently than it did with the 670G, and, for me, that’s a welcome relief. 3 out of 5 times I start getting a little nervous about the length of my current suspend, I find, when reaching down to override the suspend, that my insulin has already been resumed. It makes me smile when I see that. It’s nice to feel like my pump and I are on the same page. Not only does my pump resume insulin in a more timely manner, it also allows me to override my suspends in order to give myself a food or correction bolus. This is FANTASTIC. If I’m low but know I’m giving myself a good amount of carbs, I really don’t want to end up with a suspend, the addition of carbs and no bolus for them. This is a bad combination, and I’m 300-bound. So i override my suspend, give myself a bolus, buy myself a couple of minutes of insulin, and then at the next sensor reading, my pump suspends itself again, leaving me with some insulin on board for the carbs PLUS a broken up suspend, thereby blunting the highs and potentially softening the crash landings. My pump and I are working together with the same goals in mind and the same ideas on how to achieve them. Good stuff.
