From April 15 to August 16, 2022, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris hosted a major retrospective of Eugène Leroy. The exhibition featured around 150 works, illustrating the evolution of his art. Though long overlooked, Leroy is now recognized as one of the great artists of the 20th century. His first major Parisian exhibition was held at this same museum in 1988. Leroy, born in Tourcoing in 1910 and deceased in 2000, drew inspiration from the old masters and traditional subjects, such as nudes, self-portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. The exhibition, organized thematically, highlighted the complexity of his creative process. Alongside his artistic career, he taught Latin and Greek. From his first solo exhibition in Lille in 1937, he stood out as a unique artist. He participated in the Salon de Mai editions in the 1950s and traveled extensively to refine his art by visiting museum collections. In 1958, he settled in a house-studio in Wasquehal, in northern France. His international recognition began in 1961 when the Parisian gallery Claude Bernard exhibited his work, catching the attention of painter Georg Baselitz and dealer Michael Werner. In 1977, his son opened the Jean Leroy Gallery in Paris, which regularly showcased his works. His fame was solidified with major exhibitions in Belgium and at Documenta IX in Kassel in 1992. Leroy had a fruitful collaboration with Michael Werner, consolidating his recognition in Europe and internationally. Bernard Marcadé emphasized the importance of his work for 20th-century art, testifying to the relentless struggle of painting and imagery. His impasto technique, creating a new pictorial language, sought to capture the truth of perception and the emotion that ensues. He reworked his canvases over several years, often to the point of near-complete erasure of the subject. Leroy's works are present in numerous public and private collections. The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, with around forty of his works, is now a reference point for his art. Major retrospective exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in 2022. Late but decisive recognition of Leroy's work. Importance of his techniques and quest for perceptual truth in 20th-century art. #EugeneLeroy #MuséeDArtModerneDeParis #Retrospective #20thCenturyArt #Impasto #Painting #CreativeProcess #InternationalRecognition #Exhibition #ArtisticPerception
