In this episode of PA Mindset Matters, hosts Mercedes Dodge, PA-C and Jessica Spissinger, PA-C welcome psychiatric physician assistant Serah Sulaiman, PA-C for a conversation about pathways into psychiatry, emotional dysregulation, and innovative approaches to mental health care. Serah shares how a former student’s suicide during her time as a bilingual elementary school teacher profoundly shaped her career path and ultimately led her into psychiatry. She discusses her training at UNT Health Science Center and her experience completing the CLINAQ (Clinicians Leading Ingenuity in AI Quality) Fellowship through Morehouse School of Medicine, where her research project explored new approaches to acute emotional dysregulation, including investigating the potential role of famotidine (Pepcid) during the luteal phase. Serah also describes her current clinical work, which includes remote adult outpatient psychiatry and an in-person pediatric partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient program (PHP/IOP) serving high-acuity youth transitioning from inpatient units, residential programs, juvenile justice settings, or major school disruptions. She highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, thoughtful medication management, and deprescribing when appropriate. Beyond clinical practice, Serah incorporates creative expression into mental health care, including leading music-based expression sessions for patients. She shares how songwriting, tennis, therapy, and other outlets help clinicians manage compassion fatigue and maintain emotional balance. Serah also performs and releases music under the name Xyla, using songwriting to explore mental health themes and connect with listeners. After posting her music on TikTok (@xyla.indieartist), she discovered an unexpected community of people resonating with her work. This episode explores the intersection of psychiatry, creativity, innovation, and resilience in clinical practice.
