Paul Duffy AKA Pablo Menudo died recently in Terlingua, Texas. He was killed in an automobile accident, not murdered the way most people expected him to go. A poet, historian, philosopher, troubadour, rapscallion, and good friend. There will never be another lunatic artist quite like him, thank fucking god… He and Jim Craig saved me from the Chihuahua Desert in 2008 after I got my rental car stuck in a nasty patch of bentonite clay, and we never fell out of touch after that; in fact the pandemic only brought us closer together, as I road-tripped out to enjoy the freedom and wide open spaces of West Texas on several occasions during these past couple of years. I was lucky enough to spend many a long night unraveling life’s mysteries, singing silly songs, and drinking rotgut whiskey with Pablo, even if my liver will never forgive me. Say what you will about the drunken old coot, but he was an unsung national treasure and certainly made this miserable world a more interesting place. Forget about resting in peace; Pablo’s raising hell in heaven now. You will be missed and remembered, buddy.
