Travel advisories remained in effect after a wave of violence erupted across Mexico following the death of one of the country’s most wanted cartel leaders. “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was killed in a shootout with the Mexican military Sunday. His death sparked widespread violence across 20 Mexican states, leading to more than 70 deaths. The unrest also disrupted travel for tourists. Departing flights from Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were canceled, leaving travelers stranded. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as CJNG for its Spanish acronym, has quickly become one of Mexico’s largest criminal organizations. U.S. officials say it is one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the region, moving meth, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl into the United States and other countries. Elliott Young, a professor at Lewis and Clark College who studies gangs and cartels, sat down with KATU News on this week's segment of Your Voice, Your Vote to break down the violence. _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: KATU on Facebook: / katunews KATU on Twitter: / katunews Subscribe to KATU on YouTube: / @katunews Daily News Playlist: • KATU Daily News Playlist For more information, visit https://katu.com/ Have a news tip?
