Overview Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary is a protected marine area located in Port Phillip Bay, approximately 20 km southeast of Melbourne's CBD, near Beaumaris in the Bayside suburb. It spans about 120 hectares of shallow coastal waters, featuring crystal-clear shallows, sandstone reefs, sea caves, rock pools, and seagrass meadows. Established to conserve Victoria's marine biodiversity, it was first declared a sanctuary in the early 2000s, with strengthened legislative protection enacted by the Victorian State Government in November 2022. The sanctuary lies within the traditional Sea Country of the Bunurong People, acknowledging its deep Aboriginal cultural significance. History and Protection Declaration and Advocacy: The sanctuary's creation was a key achievement for local conservation efforts. In 2003, the Marine Care Ricketts Point (MCRP) volunteer group formed as a "watchdog" organization, monitoring the area and advocating for its protection. This led to its formal status under Victoria's marine protected areas network. Legal Framework: As a marine sanctuary, all fishing (recreational and commercial) and marine resource extraction are prohibited to allow ecosystems to thrive. It's managed by Parks Victoria and the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA), with enforcement via reports to 13 FISH (13 3474). Recent Updates: The 2022 legislation enhances long-term safeguards amid broader reforms, including a new Marine and Coastal Act to improve environmental management. Marine Life and Ecosystems The sanctuary's shallow waters (mostly under 5 meters deep) support a vibrant array of species, making it an ideal spot for observation. Key features include: Habitats: Algae, seaweeds, and seagrass meadows in greens, reds, and browns; sandstone platforms teeming with invertebrates; and sediment-rich seafloors for bottom-dwellers. Wildlife Highlights: Invertebrates: Sea stars, anemones, crabs, octopuses, and nudibranchs in rock pools and reefs. Fish: Port Jackson sharks (migrating south in spring/summer), wrasses, leatherjackets, and schools of small reef fish. Other: Weedy seadragons, cuttlefish, and diverse mollusks. Biodiversity Resources: A book, Algae and Marine Invertebrates of Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary by Jessica Reeves and John Buckeridge, details over 300 species.
