Remembrance Sunday has been marked in the United Kingdom (and increasingly so in the Republic of Ireland) since the 11th November 1919. It is a day for remembering with thanks all the service personnel who gave their lives, not just in two world wars, but in many other conflicts between the wars and since 1945. Various dignitaries have attended our service in Enniskillen over the years including, since 1987, whoever was the Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) on that day. On 8th November 1987, an IRA bomb detonated in a building beside the town's war memorial (cenotaph) during a Remembrance Sunday ceremony. Eleven people (10 civilians and a police officer) were killed, many of them elderly, and 63 were injured. The twelfth fatality, Ronnie Hill, died after spending 13 years in a coma. This thirty-seventh anniversary will bring back sad memories for many.
