Supreme Court Extends Bengal SIR Verification Deadline, Deploys Jharkhand & Odisha Judges

The Supreme Court has granted the Election Commission extended time for voter verification in West Bengal, allowing the process to continue until the day before polling. The decision addresses over 80 lakh pending pleas from voters who were excluded from the electoral rolls. The court noted that approximately 80 days would be required to hear all Bengal SIR pleas, citing the massive backlog of cases. To expedite the verification process, judges from neighbouring states Jharkhand and Odisha will assist in the exercise. The Calcutta High Court had earlier reported that 250 judicial officers at the district judge level had already been deployed for the task. The Supreme Court's order allows these officials to handle verification of logical discrepancy cases and unmapped voters.
