In an era where minor setbacks easily become narratives of victimhood, what can we learn from Eklavya—the archer who lost his thumb yet never lost faith in himself to rise again? Join Amish and Bhavna as they discuss the story of one of the greatest archers of his time- Eklavya -in this episode of The Humans of Mahabharata. Eklavya was a Nishad—a forest dweller, and the son of King Hiranyadhanus. According to some Puranas, his royal lineage traces back to Maharaja Nala and Damayanti. After Guru Dronacharya demanded the ultimate guru dakshina, Eklavya gave up his right thumb without hesitation. He did not become bitter or seek revenge; instead, he taught himself to shoot again and reclaimed his place as a master archer. Later, Eklavya joined King Jarasandha’s army. When Lord Krishna defeated Jarasandha, Eklavya attacked Dwarka to avenge his friend. He fought bravely but was wounded and finally killed by Lord Krishna. On his deathbed Eklavya and Lord Krishna had a poignant ‘Shastrarth’-emphasizing on forgiveness, compassion, and the transcendence of worldly attachments. And even then Eklavya was only concerned for his mother- there was no bitterness or hatred..just sadness. Eklavya was not an oppressed tribal, but a royal figure who lived with dignity and never looked at himself as a victim, even when life took the most terrible turns!
