Co-director of cerebrovascular surgery and director of the neurosurgical anatomy laboratory at Miami Neuroscience Institute [TRANSCRIPT]: - My name is Robert Wicks. I'm a neurosurgeon. I am the co-director of Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at Miami Neuroscience Institute. I specialize in cerebrovascular neurosurgery, and that is an area of neurosurgery that oftentimes is faced with dealings with some of the most critical problems, and those include stroke, which is a blood vessel blockage that can result in weakness, speech difficulty, numbness, or dealing with something called brain aneurysms, which are a weakness in the blood vessel. Within neurosurgery, I think the future holds that we may be able to use a patient's own cells or their immune system to prevent stroke, prevent rupture of brain aneurysms, and then also offer better treatments with improved recovery. One recent patient that had a particular impact on me is an older lady who presented to the hospital with having a hemorrhage within her brain. In many cases, we are not able to offer to treatments for that particular type of vascular malformation, other than potentially a targeted radiation treatment. It was only through the comprehensive care that we were able to offer through the collaborations with the Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, and The Miami Neuroscience Institute, in addition to Baptist Health, that we were able to provide her that care that allowed her a full recovery.
