Pat Donohue performs Blind Willie McTell's classic, Statesboro Blues, first recorded in 1928, then segues into Ave Maria, Franz Schubert's famous 1825 composition. Statesboro Blues has been recorded by numerous artists including John Mayall, Dave Van Ronk, Chris Smither, Tom Rush, and perhaps most famously by The Allman Brothers Band...Franz Scubert actually wrote the music for Ave Maria for an excerpt from the poem "The Lady of the Lake" by Sir Walter Scott (1771- 1832), translated into German by Adam Storck. Schubert called his piece "Ellens dritter Gesang" (Ellen's third Song)...Who else but Pat Donohue could seamlessly juxtapose a very cool American blues song from 1928, and a well loved German classical piece from 1825, into one beautiful whole! Performed here on February 4th, 2016. Golden's Deli, Saint Paul, Minnesota. (Videobombed the whole time by comedian Bill Murray)
