Today, February 7th, we walk through the atmospheric "mryka" of the city, following the path of kings and merchants. Our journey begins at the magnificent Powder Tower, a 15th-century masterpiece that was originally built as a grand coronation gift rather than a defensive structure. From there, we stroll down Celetná, one of the city's oldest trade routes, named after the medieval bread once baked here. We’ll cross the iconic Old Town Square, the soul of Prague since the 12th century, surrounded by Romanesque foundations and Gothic spires. Finally, we emerge into the bustling energy of Wenceslas Square, the administrative heart of the New Town. The tower was intended to be an attractive entrance into the city instead of a defensive tower. The foundation stone was placed by Vladislav II. The city council gave Vladislav II the tower as a coronation gift. While it was being built, it was called the New Tower. It is one of Prague's oldest streets and part of the Royal Route. Although, Celetná is a former Prague trade route. The street is named after bread baked in the area during the Middle Ages. It is surrounded by historical buildings such as the Old Town City Hall with the famous Astronomical Clock, the imposing St. Nicholas Church and Church of Our Lady before Tyn, and many houses and palaces of various architectural styles and colorful history. It has been a center of Prague Old Town since the middle ages when it was a marketplace crossing European merchants' roads. The first houses were built around the Old Town Square in the 12 and 13 centuries. Some present homes still have Romanesque or Gothic foundations, basements, or ground floors. The Old Town City Hall was built in the 14 century, and the Church of Our Lady before Tyn a little later.
