HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM | DIGESTIVE ORGANS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS 1. Mechanical Digestion Process The mechanical digestion process is the process of digestion of food which is carried out using movements, such as chewing, swallowing, pumping, crushing and squeezing food. Mechanical digestion aims to change the size of food into smaller pieces, so that it is easier to process in the body. The mechanical digestion process occurs in the mouth and stomach, precisely when food is mashed by the movement of the stomach muscles. 2. Chemical Digestion Process Meanwhile, the chemical digestion process is a food digestion process that involves enzymes. This chemical digestion aims to change small food particles into a form that is ready to be absorbed by the body. The chemical digestion process occurs in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, bile and intestines. 1. Mouth The mouth functions as a place where food enters and the digestive process begins. This is because in the mouth, mechanical digestion occurs by the teeth and chemical digestion by the amylase enzyme. 2. Throat and Oesophagus The throat (pharynx) is the digestive tract that connects the oral cavity to the esophagus. Food is swallowed from the mouth, then enters through the throat, and is passed to the esophagus. In the walls of the esophagus, peristaltic movements occur, namely squeezing movements that push food towards the stomach. 3. Gastric The next digestive system in humans is the stomach. In the stomach, mechanical digestion and chemical digestion occur. Mechanical digestion in the stomach occurs when food is crushed again by the stomach muscles. 4. Pancreas, Liver, and Bile The liver is a complementary organ in the digestive system because it forms bile which is needed in the process of digesting fat. This bile is greenish yellow in color and contains salt, cholesterol and lecithin. The bile fluid will then be stored in the gallbladder, before being used in the small intestine. 5. Small Intestine Furthermore, the small intestine is a digestive organ located between the stomach and large intestine. The shape is in the form of a channel with a length of around 670 cm to 760 cm. Well, the small intestine can be further divided into 3 parts, namely the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. 6. Large Intestine The large intestine is a digestive organ connected to the small intestine. Leftover food that cannot be digested and absorbed by the body will then be passed to the large intestine. This is because the large intestine functions to decompose food waste and turn it into feces, with the help of Escherichia coli bacteria. 7. Rectum and Anus Before feces are excreted from the body through the anus, they will first be stored in the rectum. In the rectum, the sensor will send a signal to the brain to decide whether the stool is expelled or not. Thank you for watching. There are lots of topics to choose from in the playlist!
