Lotta people have a lot of hard q's about male vtubers and whether their growth is automatically stymied by their gender. I contend that there are a number of complicating factors that give us that impression, but it isn't necessarily so! Using the infamous number disparity of Hololive vs. Holostars as a case study, I talk about some of my theories and observations on why some channels seems to do 'better' than others out of the gate. tl;dr: it's complicated! I suspect the impression that male vtuber characters tend to grow more slowly on the whole is due to how many of them come from vtubers' fanbases, and how the disparity in numbers is largely predicated on a disparity in experience! Especially among new indie vtubers. In addition, the way in which Hololive blew up so much- especially in the West- set a lot of the precedent for how audiences conceive of vtubers! Holostars, lacking as many viral breakout hits as Hololive, tends to be discovered less in isolation and more along with the myriad agencies and indie vtubers that one is likely to encounter upon getting a bit deeper into their Rabbit Hole Journey.
