The Nightcat

This was my first attempt at learning a Songo Foot Ostinato. The song, 'The Nightcat' comes from the Darryn Farrugia book, Groove Perspectives. I've never really played more than 'reception' Samba and Bosa Nova grooves prior to this. I found this quite challenging, especially playing open-handed and locking into a groove and keeping the dynamics as consistent as possible - rim shots for every back beat and hitting the centre of the snare for all ghost notes - and staying balanced/keeping tempo, when changing to the ride and back. Even getting the bell consistent without loosing coordination required focussed attention during practice. I've also not played many improvised solos in a Songo style before - trying to build up the intensity and not loose the clavé whilst doing so, added another element of difficulty. I enjoyed working on this piece and others from the Groove Perspectives play-along book and would highly recommend it to any drummer wanting to improve their funk/fusion/latin playing.
