Historian Robert Tombs, who is also a Brexiteer, told the Telegraph that ardent Remainers despise the working classes and are annoyed at the thought that those less worthy than themselves, have decided their future for them. In fact he says, those Remainers see themselves as some sort of elite and that the so called ‘Remainer Revolt’ was more about the identity politics of considering themselves as the beautiful people, rather than any real belief in the goodness of Brussels over Westminster. And because they cannot get over the effrontery of the working class upstarts, Remainers are prepared to push the political envelope beyond legitimate politics. For example he says, they have sabotaged the UK side by openly encouraging foreign authorities to resist UK domestic policy. They have also stated quite clearly that some voters are incapable of casting a meaningful vote, so they must be ignored. Something that takes our politics back to the days of yore when only the great and good were allowed to vote. And as a prime example of this type of thinking, he points to an article by the Remainer commentator Matthew Parris in the Spectator titled “Why I don’t, never have, and never will trust the people”, where Parris says of his view of Conservatives: "We are wary of the populace and instinctively hostile to the instincts of the mob. We see the popular will as a sometimes dangerous thing, to be handled, guided, and on key occasions (and subtly) thwarted." So where some see the outcome of a general vote as democratic and with the usual talk that the UK electorate somehow always comes up with the right answer, we now have talk of we can't trust the stupid voter - well some of them anyway. As Tombs said, the 'enlightened elite' see it as their job to govern by subterfuge, if necessary. The obvious and shallow counter to this by Remainers is, of course, their call for another referendum, or 'more democracy' as they call it. But these so-called 'enlightened people' will cynically try to use this tactic every time they lose a vote, so as to keep us all voting until they get their desired result. Then they'll claim that the matter is settled for all time. Now, I get this sort of 'Leave-voters-are-thickos' attitude in my own interactions with Remainers, but with a twist - you're one of the few of the more intelligent Brexiteers, they say to me, but all the others are thick and bigoted - but what they don't realise is that I'm no different to the overwhelming majority of Leave voters, who are all capable of taking in the pros and cons of an argument and coming to their own reasoned conclusions. At the end of the day, the politicians handed over the task of deciding the nations's future to the electorate. And after a long campaign with robust debate on all sides, a result emerged. But all the winning side has seen ever since, is blatant attempts to try and thwart that democratic result - and some of it done with a sort of egotistical overbearing virtuous pride in their own righteousness. And I've got to say, if that is not the self proclaimed enlightened elite showing their utter contempt for the great unwashed, then I don't know what qualifies as such. Anyway, what do you think?
