Gavin Mariano spent five days battling COVID-19 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital wondering if he would heal, but he was finally able to smile again thanks to an acoustic rendition of a Mariah Carey song. Mariano had been lying in his hospital bed feeling anxious and isolated when Ruth Smith, MT-BC, came by for a music therapy session. "‘Always Be My Baby’" has that repetitive section where she goes 'do do doop dum.' And for some patients with anxiety, finding points of repetition can be really helpful," explains Smith. She sang the Mariah melody and played an acoustic guitar in full protective gear. The experience did wonders for Mariano. He was discharged from the hospital the day after his music therapy session and praises Smith for helping lift his spirit and change his outlook. “Her voice was unbelievable, like her musicianship, her calmness,” says Mariano. “She's all suited up in a room with someone who had COVID. And it was a first time, literally, the first time I smiled." #MusicTherapy #MariahCarey #IUHealth
