In January 2026, Colorado Mesa University’s Davis School of Business Professor of Economics Nathan Perry, PhD, presented a comprehensive agriculture study he conducted, commissioned by the Business Incubator Center through its AgriWest initiative. The study examines the economic impact and overall health of agriculture across Western Colorado, using agricultural census data, producer surveys and economic analysis to document long-term trends and current conditions. The presentation outlines the findings of the study, highlighting agriculture’s role as a key economic driver in Mesa, Delta, Montrose, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties, generating about $720 million in economic output and supporting thousands of jobs. It also addresses challenges facing producers, including water availability, labor pressures, land use changes and an aging agricultural population, offering insight into business viability and the future of agriculture on the Western Slope.
