The sanctum doorway is decorated with conventional auspicious and is guarded by Dwarapals and is purified by the river goddesses, Ganga and Yamuna, sculpted in human form. The temple is considered to be the most impressive and refined in the Khajuraho complex, with over 900 sculptures carved into sandstone stacked without mortar. Both the exteriors and interiors of the temples are lavishly carved. Ceilings are decorated with intricate geometric and floral designs. Pillar brackets bear sculptures of griffins alternating with maidens, standing under trees, carved in high relief. Kandariya Mahadeva temple is dedicated to Shiva and the Shiva Lingam installed in the center of the sanctum of the temple located beneath the main Shikhara. Sculpture in the Khajuraho temples is harmoniously integrated with their architecture. The unified design of the temple, with its horizontal bands of sculpture, is perfectly balanced with the rising verticality of the building. Warriors, dancers, musicians, hunting parties, sculptors at work, and royal figures are mainly sculpted in relief on the rows of the plinth, and in small niches of the superstructure.
