In this video I ask the question, ‘Do photographers need medium format quality?’ I did a photo shoot in a local studio and pitched my own Canon R6 MKII 24.4 megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera up against the mighty Hasselblad 100 megapixel medium format mirrorless camera. How much difference in quality is there really? And, given the Hasselblad X2D 100C plus two Hasselblad XCD series lenses (35-75 f3.5-4.5 zoom and a 135mm f2.8 prime) is going to cost ££16,000 while the Canon R6 MKII and two RF series Canon lenses (24-70 f2.8L and a 70-200 f2.8L) comes in at £8,300 – half the price of the Hasselblad set. So, is there £8,000 worth of image quality difference? Does the law of diminishing returns come into play here? Course, there is a notable difference, but it’s nowhere near as large as you might think and only certain photographers will require the extra resolution, but most won’t. There is more to a great photograph than sensor size and resolution along. Lenses (optics) are more important, as is knowledge and knowing about lighting and so on and so forth. It could be argued that the camera is the least important piece of equipment in the photographic equation. Just look at some of those amazing and iconic photographs taken during the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, before the digital revolution and all the gadget men and geeks and their addiction to pixel counts and resolution ever existed.
