A child's mind is like wet cement. Howsoever you walk on it, makes a lasting impression. So trudge on it with respect and love. ( The reference to all the text below starts in the video at around 02 minutes and 56 seconds :) ) "Pre"-Script:- this IS a lengthy post :) Only for the patient and lovely Paediatric practitioners out there ;) and needless to say, your comments are welcome. While much discussions happen in regards to newer techniques and materials (which equates to everything on other specialty groups like Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, etc), what's that one thing that makes a hell lot of a difference to our branch whether it's used or unused? The Psyche! The irony is that although a major chunk of our field gives importance to the psyche, it's undoubtedly the most under-used threatening-to-go-vestigial part of our training and of who we really are. Although it seems to be quite trivial a part, never under-estimate the power it can give a kiddo in turning the world all around for his/her benefit. This video link posted below and a preface to it will let you know how good it is. About a week back I received a call from the warden of the school that this girl won a Maths Olympiad in her category nationwide. Feels like any ordinary story? Do kindly read along. We might all not do great things but we certainly can do little things with more love and compassion. And of course, in the end, it's all providence! (and yes, the video is lengthy but I do hope it's fun çause firstly it was at-the-spur-of-the-moment-thing to save a girl and secondly, we didn't even look like doctors in our attire; we were covered in jungle dirt too :)) In all those years while I galloped horseback at the jungle racecourse table-top, I never got a chance to see that there was a school there. This time, I chose not to ride a horse but explore the jungle on foot. And voila, out of all the schools that could have been there in the wilderness of the woods, it was St. Xavier's High School! Being a Xavierite myself, I felt obligated to pay a visit. The following case is of a young girl K*****e and how I was meant to be there for her:- While I introduced Kuntal and myself to the sisters there, we talked about our specialty in treating children and mine specifically related to psychotherapy and it's importance in the lives of children. I was told about two very special kids, who specifically came under the banner of CAN (Child Abuse and Neglect). Unfortunately, one child wasn't at the school then and in the case of the second, the school was too afraid to intervene because of her intimidating-recently-divorced-mother. They said that she had stopped interacting or playing with her friends, would skip meals and wouldn't talk much. They had tried their best but didn't know what more to do other than pity the girl. I had the skill and the passion to do what I deemed was necessary to help the girl out and for I, it was divine providence that I happened to find this school in the midst of a jungle with a little girl who could benefit from what I am really good at. Though there was this little roadblock:- I couldn't have talked to her alone as that would have flagged off her mother and I was there just for about half an hour. We had a train to catch in the afternoon. I had to improvise. I planned on communicating with specific skills using gestures, metaphors and live examples thereby delivering the right suggestions covertly to that specific girl and to the class in general so that everyone benefits and she in particular. 3 days after this day when I received a call from the sisters there, I was pleased beyond bounds. The 9 year old had resumed playing her favorite games and had asked for her all time favorite dal chawal the very next day. More than her getting helped, it seemed like the road was for me to walk on and a sign to keep doing what I love to do. P.S. The audio would be in English and the vernacular (Hindi) that the children were comfortable with
