This video was filmed during 3/3/23 when the Powell Street cable cars are temporarily replaced by buses for the whole day due to street closures despite Props 10 (1947) & Q (1971), but the California Street cable car line is operating in normal service since it’s luckily unaffected. Cable Car 53 was originally built in 1907 by WL Holman, the same company that built Muni’s first streetcar from 1912. During Thursday last week, I saw this cable car for the first time and one of the operators told me that it’s a brand new cable car, meaning that it’s rebuilt & freshly repainted by Muni itself. Few days later, I was determined to ask one of the SF Railway Museum volunteer docents about it and they told me that the “Ribbon” on the front of cable car 53 is actually missing. Update: The ribbons are added back on Cable Car 53 with the lyrics from the song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” sung by the Legendary Tony Bennett. He’s now dedicated by this cable car. The California Street Cable Car Line was originally operated by California Street Cable Railroad Company (Cal Cable) until 1951 (Muni began operating the California Street Cable Car Line since 1952). Debuted in 1878, it’s the oldest cable car line remaining in the entire San Francisco Cable Car System.
