We took a charter to go snorkeling at Sombrero Reef out of Marathon, FL in July. It was an awesome experience! The water was beautiful and the clarity was pretty awesome! The reef was a very large area with plenty to explore and look at. We saw a ton of fish including Yellowtail Snapper, Bermuda Chubs, Barracuda, Mangrove Snapper, Schoolmaster Snapper, Parrot Fish, Porkfish, Doctorfish, Grunts, and even saw an Eagle Ray! Also a great place to dive. One of the best and easiest Florida Reef's! The Sombrero Key Lighthouse was built on the reef in 1858, and continued in use until 2015. The Sombrero Key Light is the tallest lighthouse in the Florida Keys, and was the last lighthouse constructed under the supervision of Lieutenant George Meade. The lighthouse tower is unsafe, and boaters are forbidden from tying up to the tower or climbing on it.
