In many ways, it is my medicine. In this video, I share the steps I use to make a fluid abstract painting. This acrylic pouring uses the flip-cup method. My paints are specialty craft paints, so many neon and metallics are used. I mix with Floetrol though you can use anything from commercial pouring mediums to white glue. Get the Glue-All if you are going that route versus the school staff. Depending upon thickness you can add some water. Really you want a “warm honey” consistency so it could be a 2:1 ratio on pouring medium to paint. With this method, I use a vinyl record as the surface. Tape one side of the hole then paints on the opposite side. Place the cups layered one on top of the next. If they begin to fall into each other, then you have heavier paint on top. This is okay and called a Dirty Flip Cup. At that point, you flip the cup once full and wait maybe a minute or so before opening it. The paint will spread quickly. Make sure that your surface is level. Pick up and carefully move the canvas or vinyl record to cover the surface, tilting towards the different sides allowing the paint to run off. Scrape your sides when you sit back down to prevent more paint from leaving and again make sure that you are level. Torch with heat to pop air bubbles.
