V - "Reflection" Composition and performance by Barry McNaughton Program Notes: When you contemplate the waters at daybreak, you can hear the lotus bloom. Kyokusai, 1874 This piece represents an observation of the relationship between, the unseen energy with which the Universe imbues all lifeforms, and the aura which is ultimately reflected back into the Universe. Using the ephemeral existence of a blooming lotus in representation of this divine (yet seemingly mundane) event, each movement of this piece represents a distinct stage of this interaction between the celestial and the earthly. The first four stages (all words starting with the prefix “In”) represent the inward flow of energy (detailing the Universe’s act of creation from start to finish). The final movement (containing the prefix “Re”) represents the return of this energy as a force which serves to forever transforms the universe itself. The five movements represents the five elements of Japanese Buddhism: I. Invitation – Earth (地) – stability The universe invites the observer to witness the act of creation unfold. II. Incantation – Water (水) – adaptability The ceremonial rite begins and the flower is called into existence. III. Innervation – Fire (火) – energy, transformation The life force of the universe courses through the veins of the flower. IV. Incarnation – Wind (風) – movement, breath The flower becomes animated and experiences all of the stages of its own physical existence. V. Reflection – Void (空) – emptiness, spirit, transcendence The unique energy shaped by this single flower’s existence reverberates back through the universe, reshaping the fabric of the eternal. Bearing witness to this process gives the observer pause for reflection on the nature of existence.
