This mantra is recorded in the sutra called "Dainichi-kyo" and is based on the teachings of Dainichi Nyorai. The word "尊勝 (sonsho)" is very important in Buddhism. "尊 (son)" in Buddhism refers to the object of respect and worship, while "勝 (sho)" means to overcome or to win. Thus, the term "尊勝 (sonsho)" represents the Buddhist spirit of showing respect to the sublime existence or teachings and overcoming oneself by accepting them. "陀羅尼 (Darani)" is a Buddhist term that refers to mantras or words using sound or letters. It is said to have the power to purify the mind and body and avoid disasters and illnesses, and there are various Daranis depending on the purpose. The origin of the word "Darani" is from the Sanskrit word "Dharaṇī (धारणी)", which means "that which holds." This word came to be used in Buddhist terminology because Daranis were used in religious ceremonies and magic in ancient India. Daranis are transmitted not only through letters such as Sanskrit and Chinese characters but also through oral tradition. They play an important role in Esoteric Buddhism and are also called "Shingon." Daranis are not only simple words or mantras but may contain Buddhist ideas and philosophical concepts, making them meaningful. As its name suggests, "Sonsho Darani" means "the victorious mantra with noble power." It is said that chanting this Darani enables one to receive the protection of compassionate Buddha and Bodhisattvas, avoid disasters and illnesses, and attain happiness and success. "Sonsho Darani" is one of the essential Daranis in Esoteric Buddhism and is widely used in practice, ceremonies, and prayers. For Buddhists, it is an important mantra to express respect for compassionate Buddha and Bodhisattvas and to pray for purification and happiness. "Sonsho Darani" is a Buddhist sutra that is treasured in sects such as Shingon and Esoteric Buddhism. This sutra is said to protect oneself from evil spirits and disasters and bring good fortune and happiness. This scripture has a very large number of characters, and there are various versions of it. Below, we introduce the full text and translation of one version of the Honorable Victory Dhāraṇī(Sonsho Darani): Sanskrit transcription: namah samantā bhadraviṣayavartiṇyai tathāgatāya arhate samyak-sambuddhāya namah sarvatathagatatathagatāya arhate samyak-sambuddhāya namah sarvavidyāvidyāvidyāviśuddhāya gaṇḍabheruṇḍa śrīmatkoti virajāviṣṇuśaṅkhapāṇe svāhā Translation: "I offer my respects. I offer my respects to all Buddhas. I offer my respects to those who have attained the state of worthy and fully awakened ones, the Tathāgatas. I offer my respects to all Tathāgatas, those who have attained the state of worthy and fully awakened ones. I offer the conch of Vishnu, which symbolizes purity, carries precious things, and has innumerable armies, and which is the symbol of crustaceans and snakes, to purify all knowledge and ignorance." Thus, the Honorable Victory Dhāraṇī commonly contains content that praises numerous Buddhas and Tathāgatas and offers the conch of Vishnu, which symbolizes pure power.
