Fiona's charming, narcissistic former suitor, Prince Charming, and his powerful, villainous mother, the Fairy Godmother, are al part of the royal court, complicatingmatters further. In a desperate attempt to win Harold's approval and make Fiona happy, Shrek is tricked into drinking a "Happily Ever After" potion provided by the Fairy Godmother's disgruntled factory worker, Puss in Boots. The potion transforms Shrek into a handsome human and Donkey into a majestic white stallion by day. However, the potion's effect is only permanent if Shrek receives "True Love's Kiss" from Fiona by midnight. The plan backfires when Fiona, who also drank a potion as a child (revealed to be the same one), is tricked into believing Charming is her transformed husband. Shrek, Donkey, and Puss must break into the Fairy Godmother's fortress, stop her scheme to put Charming on the throne, and break the spell before it's too late, leading to a climactic ballroom confrontation and a riotousrescue mission. The film ultimately champions the message that true love means accepting someone for who they are on the inside.
