On a recent trip to South Africa I joined up with Danie for a weekend attempt at the 13 Peaks Challenge in the Southern Peninsula area of the Western Cape, South Africa. We treated it as two back-to-back 'long runs' checking off half of the route on a Saturday and the remainder on Sunday. The 13 Peaks is a route created by ultra running legend Ryan Sandes. It is around 107km in length and has an elevation gain of around 6700 meters. The route winds its way across the mountains surrounding Cape Town. There is no better way to see Cape Town in it's entirety than from the mountains up above it! Along the way we were joined by Danie's friends and partner to help pace and support us. 00:00 Introduction 00:12 About the 13 Peaks 01:10 The start - Signal Hill 01:50 Lion's Head 02:23 Heading to Maclear's Beacon 03:25 Toward Grootkop 04:57 On to Judas Peak 05:28 Down Judas Peak, and toward Klein Leeu Kop 07:02 Heading toward Suther Peak, Dehydration kicks in 08:53 Next up - Chapmans Peak 11:41 Slow recovery from dehydration, on to Noordhoek Peak 12:40 Early morning start to Muizenberg Peak 13:26 Constantia berg next 14:20 Klassenkop peak is next, my favourite 15:26 Descending Klassenkop, on to Devil's Peak 17:08 Coming of Devil's Peak and the final stretch back 17:47 Finishing back at Signal Hill Special thanks to Danie, Tracy, and the friends that ran along with us as we took on this challenge in brutally hot weather earlier this year in January.
