1 Technology and Culture

This is the first lecture in a course on Philosophy and Sociology of Technology, prepared for the fall semester at Simon Fraser University. The lectures will be repeated in Zoom sessions with students enrolled in the class, but they are available here for review and for anyone interested. I expect the synchronous performances to be more lively. The syllabus with the list of readings is at http://www.sfu.ca/~andrewf/syllabus48... It is ironic that I am teaching this class online. I helped to create the first online education program in 1982 at the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute in La Jolla, California. Because of the pandemic I am now once again teaching what will probably be my last class online. Some of the technology has changed but the spirit is the same: no fake automation, human interaction.
