Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G minor, Op. 23, No.5 (music only) Pianist Duane Hulbert

Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote this prelude in 1901. He published it two years later in his Opus 23 set of ten preludes. Of all of the ten preludes, this is by far the most popular. This prelude has an ABA structure. The opening has repeated sixteenth-note chords giving it a military march-like feel (Alla marcia,). The B section is lush, lyrical and a bit melancholy. The left hand plays sweeping arpeggios in a lyrical, slower tempo marked poco meno mosso., The march-like opening returns again but Rachmaninoff surprises the listener by ending this grand section very quietly..
