CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local family's service dog story featured on Netflix is helping to raise awareness for another family in need. "Dogs", a new documentary streaming on Netflix, features the family of a young lady from West Chester named Corrine. Corrine recently got a service dog from 4 Paws for Ability, an organization in Xenia, Ohio. Rory, Corrine's service dog, assists her when she has seizures. The Netflix show has helped to raise awareness for 4 Paws for Ability, which has led to an increase in donations for the organization. The episode has also raised awareness of the increasing need for these dogs -- especially for families like the Rufener family, who is actively raising money to get a service dog for their son, Louie. Louie, 10, was born with a rare chromosome deletion that has affected his growth and his neurological abilities. Louie and his brother Charlie, 6, play well together, but Louie has trouble speaking and processing sensory overload unless someone can sign with him. The Rufener family hopes that a service dog will be able to help keep Louie calm when he gets overwhelmed. However, service dog training is not cheap. Expenses are partially covered by 4 Paws for Ability but the family is tasked with raising $17,000 for training. Volunteers help train these service dogs, but it takes months because they must be trained for each child's individual needs. To help, visit Louie's support page on 4 Paws website.
