(Turn on Youtube subtitles for English subtitles) The "Pontifical Anthem and March" (Italian: Inno e Marcia Pontificale, Latin: Hymnus et modus militaris Pontificalis), also known as the "Papal Anthem", is the anthem played to mark the presence of the Pope or one of his representatives, such as a nuncio, and on other solemn occasions. When the Vatican's flag is ceremonially raised, only the first eight bars are played. The music was composed in 1869 by Charles Gounod, for the celebration on 11 April 1869 of Pope Pius IX's golden jubilee of priestly ordination. While the Papal Anthem also serves as the anthem of the Holy See and the Vatican City State, the Vatican stresses that it "is not to be understood as a national anthem"; it is a composition whose words and music "speak to the heart of many throughout the world who see in Rome the See of Peter." This recording of the anthem dates from around 1949, when the anthem was officially declared as the Papal Anthem by Pope Pius XII, replacing Viktorin Hallmayer's "Marcia trionfale". Stilisticamente si tratta di una pomposa marcia alla francese, tipica del repertorio del proprio compositore: l'inno si divide in due parti (la prima in fa maggiore, solenne e maestosa, seguita dalla seconda, il cui stile è affine a quello dei canti liturgici), cui fa seguito una terza parte (la Marcia pontificia) dal carattere imperioso. La Santa Sede giudica tuttavia limitativa la definizione di "inno nazionale" per la composizione, che intenderebbe invece parlare «al cuore di quanti in tutto il mondo vedono in Roma la sede di Pietro», configurandosi pertanto come canto transnazionale ad uso di tutti coloro che professano la religione cattolica, riconoscendo il primato di autorità al vescovo di Roma.
