Belcanto tenor, live at Orlando’s Wine & Spirits, Plymouth. Hugo will sing and play a range of popular love songs in Neapolitan dialect: starting with traditional canzoni of the 1820s/1830s, transcribed, musically arranged & collected by the French Neapolitan Guillaume Cottrau (Passatempi Musicali, 1824-1829, 1848) in the Naples of the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1816-1861; subsumed into the new Kingdom of Italy, 1861-1946); and ending with harmonically (and psychologically) more complex pieces of the 1950s. Disarmingly direct, these heartfelt, sometimes comic, rapturous, melancholic, tempestuous, or pained, songs spring up from popular musical and poetic culture in Naples, hearkening back to 18c comic opera, and stretching further back to love lyric of Medieval and Renaissance times and of Greco-Roman antiquity (in the ‘new city’ Neapolis that had emerged from Parthenope, the archaic Greek city of the siren-mermaid Parthenope, of the ‘maiden voice’). They also owe a debt to the refined melodic, intensely expressive 18-19c legacy of operatic bel canto, and its chief exponent in Naples, the composer Vincenzo Bellini. Taken up subsequently by famous Italian operatic tenors of the early- to mid-20c (the Neapolitan Enrico Caruso, Tito Schipa & Beniamino Gigli, to name a few) as a ‘crossover’ to more popular musical expression, many of these numbers are still familiar, including Schipa’s moody hit, Anima e core, or the sensational international ‘sunshine’ hit, ’O sole mio, and Gambardella’s enchanting ‘barcarole’ of sea, sunlight and young love in the Bay of Naples, ’O Marenariello. The following numbers are envisaged, in three blocks of four (Love 1829-1893; Passion 1898-1914; Heartbreak 1930-1957), with space for wine & chat before, in between, & after: 1.
