Yesterday January 5th was the long-awaited debut of KCAL News Mornings a new news show on the 9. KCAL new show replaced the newscast on KCBS, and that station in return they will the live East Coast feed edition of “CBS Mornings” while its live 7-9am on the right coast while it’s 4-6am back in Los Angeles. They will also air the program again at the time the left coast airs it when it’s time for the show to air in this part of the country in its regular time slot from 7am-9am. In between at 6am KCBS will simulcast KCAL morning show. All of this along with a new studio for KCAL is part of a group-wide change for all CBS Owned Station a graphics package based on the network look, and more of a national-local look. That means there align and synergies more linear single portfolio between network news and it’s owned stations. It’s not a bad idea since LA, along with New York and Chicago do terribly bad in the ratings wise for CBS in local news, so by regrouping it’s could better align them. Also KCBS will be the first station in the nation to broadcast both East and West Coast editions of a network morning show. However with this KCBS is ditching the CBS2 News brand for all newscast they will now go by there sister station brand for example in addition to the 6am show, the 11am, 5pm, 6pm, 11pm show will al be known as “KCAL News on CBS Los Ángeles” it sounds like a mouthful. I would just gone with “KCAL News at 11am on CBSLA” shorten the Los Ángeles part. So with that the KCAL brand for News is on both stations so why is that? It’s because KCAL has a stronger brand than CBS2 to Southern California viewers as they were the first station in the nation to have a three-hour news block from 8pm-11pm, and they haven’t struggled as badly as KCBS so by this rebrand and a stronger recognition LA viewers might have a better view and see they’ve expanded and that therefore increasing ratings. Also since the average viewer may not notice the difference between the two stations and think it’s KCAL because of its strong branding they’ll think there the ones expanding even though it’s the morning newscast on top of rebranding all of the KCBS newscast with their name. KCAL new morning show will air for seven hours straight from 7am-11am, and this is just the beginning for CBS as this new graphics package is part of a new group wide look where KIPX in San Francisco was first to debut in December. I like the set while it doesn’t scream Southern California it’s does CBS Mornings New York City Times Square set. I like the idea of the assignment desk on the set handled by Chris Holmstorm. It gives viewers the chance to see how the news gathering process works and give the Assignment desk workers, editors, and the behind the scenes crew some airtime I like that. The weather center is pretty, the graphics are wonderful I like the music it’s Southern California like not sure how the them will work at the other stations in the nation, I like it but one more thing where’s the time and temperature at?
