Keloğlan and the Boisterous Giant. Once upon a time, in the days of yore, Keloğlan lived with his mother in a charming little village. The place was so peaceful that even the babbling of the brooks counted as the loudest sound. Keloğlan always used his wits and cheerfulness for good. One day, a boisterous giant named Boom-Boom settled on the peak of the nearby mountain. He was so noisy that his snores sounded like thunder and his footsteps like earthquakes. All the village’s peace fled in an instant. The villagers could neither sleep nor work. Everyone complained about the giant, yet no one dared to face him. “This giant will make us deaf!” they groaned. “Don’t worry,” Keloğlan said to his mother. “I have an idea.” He asked her to bake a big round loaf of bread and to fetch a smooth, white stone from the riverbank. Keloğlan climbed the mountain and found the giant. Boom-Boom was amusing himself by throwing rocks into the water just to hear the splash. “Greetings, Brother Giant!” Keloğlan called. “You are truly strong!”. When the giant saw Keloğlan, he burst into laughter. “Of course I’m strong! And who are you, little runt?” he roared. Without a flicker of fear, Keloğlan replied, “I’m stronger than you.” Keloğlan held out the white stone to the giant. “If you’re so strong, squeeze this stone and make its water come out.” The giant took the stone and squeezed with all his might, but not a single drop came from it. “Step aside,” said Keloğlan. Without the giant noticing, he swapped the stone for the loaf in his bag. He gripped the bread with both hands and, as he squeezed, a few drops fell to the ground from the moisture inside. Boom-Boom’s jaw dropped. He began to fear this small boy. “If you promise to be quiet and stop disturbing our village,” said Keloğlan, “I won’t use this strength against you.” So impressed was the giant by Keloğlan’s power that he agreed at once. From that day on, he walked on tiptoe and, when he wished to sing, he only hummed. Thanks to clever Keloğlan, the village found its peace again.
