September is prostate cancer awareness month, and as a prostate cancer survivor myself I can’t stress enough the importance of men going to the doctor. The University Hospitals Cutler Center for Men is making it easy to get unprecedented and seamless access to the health experts, services and resources. I talked with University Hospitals Chair of Urology Lee Ponsky about their program aimed at getting more men to go to the doctor. “Men do such a lousy job of going to the doctor that if we could change behavior and every man went to the general doctor once a year just to get screened the amount of disease that we would pick up early and the amount, of lives we would save is astronomical,” According to Ponsky, men need to take a cue from women. More than 85% of the healthcare decisions are made by women and research shows that men are 200 times more likely to die from cancer. It’s a fully encompassing program created and aimed at changing men’s behavior and which is less intimidating and more encouraging for them to go to the doctor. “It doesn’t feel like a doctor’s office,” said Ponsky. The facility doesn’t have a check-in desk and offers free coffee with big screen TVs, a 50-yard football field for rehab, a basketball court, a pool table, a Zen place and more. It’s specifically designed for men, and just in case you’re too busy, they’ve got you covered there as well with their Joe Program, which helps male members navigate men’s health services with expert care and personalized guidance through their health journey. -- At 3News, we’re not here to tell you the news, we’re here to share the stories that you say matter most to you.
