(4 May 1995) English/Nat Croatian President Franjo Tudjman has warned that his forces will bomb Serb positions if attacks on Zagreb continue. In an exclusive interview with APTV he outlined what action he would take against the rebel Serbs in a week that has seen the conflict come to the heart of the capital, Zagreb. The Croatian presidential palace is a long way from the frontlines. But the Croatian president's mind is never far from the fortunes of his army. The Croatian army this week launched an offensive reclaiming hundreds of square miles (square kilometres) that rebel Serbs had taken in 1991. In retaliation, Zagreb has been bombarded by Serb rockets. President Tudjman outlined his next move. SOUNDBITE: If Croatian Serbs and Belgrade would accept negotiations then we are ready to negotiate for all the mandate of UNCRO till the autumn. If they would provoke an attack then we decide on our steps. Question So you will give till the autumn? Yes- if, as I said, the Croatian Serbs and Belgrade accept negotiation for peaceful integration. SUPER CAPTION:Franjo Tudjman, Croatian President When asked what steps he would take if there were further rocket attacks he was adamant that his army would destroy the Serb gun positions. SOUNDBITE: Question: But you would try and take out the rocket launchers? Of course that is first what we have to do. SUPER CAPTION: Franjo Tudjman, Croatian President The Croatian government had officially announced that its offensive was over but Tudjman vowed retaliation in case of new rocket strikes. SOUNDBITE: I could confirm that all Croatian army commanders have ordered not to take any attack but in the circumstances when Serbs attack not only Zagreb but also Sisak or Karlovac, Otocac and so on- its quite naturally that local commander take some steps to prevent it. SUPER CAPTION: Franjo Tudjman, Croatian President The effectiveness of his campaign of recent days gave strength to his confidence about a possible peaceful solution.
