Barbara and her husband Jan Geertsema have a small scale traditional fishing business on the Dutch Waddensea. In the weekends they sell their own catch and that of colleagues to restaurants and at biological farmers markets. Since 2011 they have opened a small restaurant highlighting local fish in the harbour of Lauwersoog. The restaurant was opened by Carlo Petrini, founder of the international Slow Food movement. Barbara is active as member of the Slow Fish Network. At TEDxGroningen, she speaks of her small fishery which uses ancient fishing techniques and is supportive of sustainable fishing. She questions how we should approach our food, and if there might not be better ways to eat. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
