They made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. Now, the names of eight Los Angeles City firefighters are permanently etched in stone, a lasting tribute to their bravery and courage. Surviving spouses, children, and other loved ones also were honored and acknowledged during the touching and compelling 2022 ceremony held by the International Association of Fire Fighters. The dedicated team from the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighter’s Fund guides and supports these hero families in an extraordinary way. Escorting them through this unforgettable journey, making sure they were not alone, is at the heart of what our charity’s Family Support Group and Board of Trustees do. 469 firefighters were memorialized at the wall of honor this time. It includes husbands, fathers and sons who have given their lives in the line of duty or died from duty-related illnesses. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this was the first time it was held since 2019. Watch as these valiant heroes are forever memorialized in the shadow of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, and our Family Support Group helps their loved ones cope with their loss, find hope and rebuild their lives. For the brave men and women of the LAFD, should anything ever happen to them during a lifetime of service, the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighter’s Fund is here to fulfill their needs. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charity founded more than a century ago, our organization is dedicated to helping the families of LAFD firefighters facing a serious crisis, such as being injured or killed in the line of duty. The needs of firefighters are unique because the profession poses many dangers and consequences. Thanks to kind and generous contributions, the Widows, Orphans & Disabled Firefighter’s Fund makes a significant impact, providing assistance with items such as basic living expenses, health insurance premiums, durable medical equipment, and awarding memorial scholarships to children of firefighters who died while active duty.
